Answer:
Your available balance is difference because anytime you make a purchase using your debit card using the VISA feature that reduces availability. You have probably figured that out by now. Other newbies may not have such as myself in the beginning who did not want to wait for a human on their phone bank line. BEWARE: VISA purchases drop off pretty quickly giving an illusion you have more money than you really do. Then 2-3 days later the VISA purchases are processed and can cause 1 or more overdrafts. With DCU it is IMPERATIVE to keep a checkbook register. I know firsthand. Most other banks keep the hold on your account until the actual "hard-charge" for your purchase is processed. DCU has told me they drop them as a policy after one business day automatically so you have full use of your money. The rationale is if the purchase you made is tying up your balance and is not ever coming through (ie: a hotel or car rental hold) then that is not fair to the customer. 99% of our purchases are not for those two venues and from that standpoint, a week hold on your money has aggravated me with other banks. Simply KEEP AN ACCURATE REGISTER and you will not have any problems or OD fees.

It could have to do with pending transactions and possible overdraft protection you have. I would suggest calling the Info center or emailing to find out for sure.

Answer:
You can open a checking account at 12 years old. However, an adult joint owner (usually a parent) must remain on the account until 17 years of age. An ATM card is available at 12 as well, and a Visa CheckCard at 17.
