Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Free $1,000 coverage available for adult members

 About the Program

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance is designed to pay you a financial benefit if you are dismembered (such as loss of a limb or sight) or pay your beneficiary if you lose your life in an accident. Typically, benefits for dismemberment vary by the severity of the injury. The full face value is typically paid upon loss of life.
The AD&D Program
All DCU Members 18 to 70 may sign up for $1,000 free coverage. Members 70 and older are eligible for $500 free. Insurance is provided through Affinion Benefits Group and underwritten by Minnesota Life Insurance Company. Premiums for the free coverage are paid by DCU Financial. Additional family or individual coverage is available at reasonable rates.
* $1,000 coverage ($500 for members 70 and older) is paid for by DCU Financial, LLC for all members who sign up.

 Who Should Participate

Should I sign up for the free coverage?
Absolutely. This is one of the many benefits of being a DCU member, but you must sign up to receive it. There are no strings attached. Within 90 days after signing up, you will receive information on your coverage. Make sure you keep this with your other insurance papers to make it easier for your family to file a claim. From time to time, Affinion will remind you by mail about your current coverage and give you the opportunity to increase it.
Should I buy additional coverage?
That's a personal decision that depends on your situation. You need to assess the financial burden on your loved ones if you suddenly lose your life by accident. Adults with children from birth though college-age are often those most in need of life insurance. In addition, younger adults are often more likely to lose their lives by accident than by natural causes. Since AD&D insurance is typically less expensive than regular life insurance, it's an affordable supplement.
If you purchase additional coverage, additional benefits are included...
  • Hospital Indemnity Benefit – If an insured person is confined to a hospital as an inpatient as a result of a covered accident for more than 7 consecutive days (starting within 90 days of the accident), then a monthly benefit will be paid. The monthly benefit will equal 1% of the additional coverage amount up to a maximum of $2,500 for up to 12 months and will be retroactive to the first day of confinement. A benefit equal to 1/30th of the monthly benefit will be paid for each day of a benefit period of less than one month..
  • Dependent Child Care Benefit – If you die from a covered accident and are survived by your spouse and one or more dependent children, we will pay a child care benefit for each eligible dependent child (under age 14 at the time of your accidental death) who is enrolled in a licensed day care center. The benefit is equal to 2% of the additional coverage amount or $2,000 (whichever is less) each year for up to two years. The maximum amount payable under this benefit is $50,000.
  • Anti-Inflation Benefit – For every two years an insured's coverage remains continuously in force, it will be increased by 5%. This provision can continue to increase coverage until it reaches 125% of the original amount of insurance.
  • Common Carrier Benefit – Provides benefits for accidental loss of life involving a collision, crash or sinking of a common carrier while riding as a fare-paying passenger. Benefit is equal to 2 times the amount of additional coverage. "Common carrier" includes any public air, land, or water conveyance operated under a license for commercial passenger service.
  • Education Benefit – Pays an education benefit for each eligible dependent child who was enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited institution of higher learning on the date of the insured's death. Benefits will also be paid for the dependent children who are in the 12th grade on the date of the insured's death, but who subsequently enroll in an accredited institution of higher learning withing 365 days of the insured's covered accident. The Education Benefit for each student who qualifies is 2% of the insured's accidental death benefit. This benefit would be paid each year the student qualifies after the insured's death, up to a maximum of $5,000 per year up to 4 years. If at the time of the insured's death there are no dependent children, we will pay an additional benefit in the amount of $1,000.
But I have coverage through my employer
Unlike such insurance through your employer, this coverage stays in force if you change jobs. You merely have to remain a DCU member and, if you have more than the free coverage, continue to pay your premiums.
How are any premiums paid?
Premiums are deducted automatically out of your DCU savings or checking account on the third business day of March, June, September, and December.
What are the premiums for additional coverage?
The cost is $1.00 per month ($12 a year) for each $10,000 of individual protection and $1.50 per month ($18 a year) for each $10,000 of family protection. The maximum offered is $250,000. Premiums are charged quarterly by ACH automatic withdrawal from your DCU Checking Account.
