Charitable Contributions at DCU

Corporate Citizenship

As a socially responsible organization, DCU is committed to partnering with other organizations that make a difference in the communities we serve. Our primary charitable initiative is directed towards supporting programs that provide a health, welfare, or social service for children; or provide educational programs or services that primarily benefit children.

DCU Supported Causes

The following is a partial list of charitable organizations that we support in a meaningful way on an annual basis:

DCU for Kids – In 2005, recognizing the importance of supporting organizations that make a difference in the communities they are a part of, DCU incorporated DCU for Kids, a non-profit charitable foundation for distribution to deserving causes and charities benefiting children and families.
Adopt-A-Classroom – DCU has adopted 60 public elementary school classrooms in the communities it serves.
The Boomer Esiason Foundation – Fighting Cystic Fibrosis
The Cam Neely Foundation – Providing care to children and families undergoing cancer treatment.
Children's Hospital Boston
The Jimmy Fund – Dana Farber Cancer Institute
And hundreds of other charitable organizations.

Funding Criteria

To be eligible for funding from DCU, organizations must meet the following criteria:

Be a registered 501(c)3 organization
Serve a community in which DCU has a physical location or a large concentration of members
Provide a health, welfare, or social service for children; or provide educational programs or services that primarily benefit children

The following are ineligible to receive contributions from DCU:

Organizations without 501(c)3 tax-exempt status from the IRS
Individuals or sponsorships of individuals in fundraising projects
Political organizations or candidates for public office
Requests that are sensitive, controversial, or harmful or that pose a potential conflict of interest to DCU
Labor, social, or fraternal organizations
Requests from religious organizations that are denominational or sectarian in purpose
For-profit organizations
Colleges and universities
Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, religion, age, color, sex, disability, national origin, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, or veteran status
Organizations outside the United States

DCU provides cash contributions only. Promotional items for door prizes are not available.

Advertising Criteria

Many organizations sell advertising in support of their events or programs. Since these opportunities typically have extremely limited value as an advertising vehicle compared to other media, DCU will apply the Charitable Donation Funding Criteria above in deciding whether to participate. These advertisements include:

Advertising in event programs
Golf tournament sponsorships
Sponsorship of children's sports teams and sports events
School yearbook advertising
School-sponsored media outlets

Charitable Contribution Requests

Because DCU is a not-for-profit organization and our financial resources are limited, we cannot accommodate all requests we receive. Therefore we must carefully review all appeals and grant support only to those organizations that best meet our community involvement objectives.

All proposals must be submitted on the organization's letterhead, by postal mail, at least 60 days in advance of the need. Requests must include:

Concise statements about the project and the agency including programs, need, management, goals, and a record of accomplishments
Current roster of the agency's board of directors
How the proceeds will be used
Specific amount requested from DCU
If request is greater than $500, include copy of most recent audited financial statements
List of other major sponsors
Proof of tax-exempt status

Attachments such as photos are accepted, but cannot be returned.

Review Process

Each request is individually reviewed for eligibility. Requesting organizations will receive notification of a funding decision within 30 days of receipt of request. Mail requests to:
